How Exploring Enterprise helped profoundly deaf Ruth grow her confidence and self esteem to start her own business

Ruth always dreamed of setting up her own children’s nursery and had been volunteering for Ballyclare Family Focus at the time and seen a real need for this so that was the start of her journey. Her heart was telling her what she needed to do but her head was telling her that she had no business skills and did not know anything about starting a business. This is where Exploring Enterprise intervened

How has the programme helped her?

The programme has helped me tremendously, it has really raised the bar for me.  Not only has my confidence and self esteem grown but I feel that I am very much in control and I now recognise that I do have the required skills and have learnt so many new skills that are helping me in my business.

What are your key achievements?

Actually going for it and setting up Ballyclare Golden Blossom Pre School.  I have created 2 playgroups supporting 36 children to date, 3 days per week.  I have secured funding, employed staff, secured volunteers and developed all my own policies and procedures.  I did have my doubts but the programme has made me deal with these and move forward.

Where are you now compared to start of programme

I now have a purpose and want to give others a purpose and leave a legacy in the local community.  I feel I have created something positive for the children and want them to be able to tell my story to their children and say that I have made a difference in their lives.

How have I found the support from AEA?

Perfect.  I still miss Kerry and it was hard letting go but it was a good thing as it made me do things for myself and taught me to fix things.  I now realise that I can do it and so I just do it.  It was not easy at the start but I am now going in the right direction
