Enterprise NI Celebrates 40 Years Of Local Enterprise Agencies

Enterprise NI highlights the collective impact of Local Enterprise Agencies operating across Northern Ireland.

Local Enterprise Agencies (LEAs) across Northern Ireland are being celebrated from March until June 2026 as part of Enterprise NI’s LEA Spotlight, recognising a landmark 40 years of enterprise agencies working at the heart of local communities to support entrepreneurship, innovation and economic growth.

For four decades, Local Enterprise Agencies have played a vital role in supporting start-ups and micro enterprises by providing accessible property solutions, tailored business support programmes, and practical services that help local people turn ideas into sustainable businesses. Their work continues to enrich local communities by creating jobs, strengthening local economies and fostering a culture of enterprise across Northern Ireland.

Through their close connections with local people, LEAs act as a gateway to the resources, tools and guidance needed to start and grow a business. This ensures more individuals are empowered to participate in enterprise and contribute to the growth of both local economies and the wider Northern Ireland economy.

Michael McQuillan, Chief Executive of Enterprise Northern Ireland said: “For 40 years, Local Enterprise Agencies have been at the frontline of enterprise development in Northern Ireland.

"Their collective impact on local communities and the economy is significant, and this spotlight is an opportunity to recognise the vital role they continue to play.

“In today’s challenging economic environment, we know entrepreneurs face pressures from rising costs, skills gaps and market uncertainty. That’s why accessible, tailored support, from flexible property solutions to expert advice and development programmes, remains essential for those starting and scaling enterprises. These agencies provide that support every day, ensuring more people can take the leap into entrepreneurship with confidence."
