John McGrillen Becomes Chairman of Enterprise Northern Ireland

Enterprise Northern Ireland (ENI), the representative body for the region’s 26 Local Enterprise Agencies (LEAs), is pleased to announce the appointment of John McGrillen as its new Chair.

Enterprise NI plays a pivotal role in driving inclusive economic growth across Northern Ireland, working through its network of LEAs to deliver vital start-up and enterprise support, facilitate access to finance, and shape evidence-based enterprise policy and research. The organisation is at the forefront of supporting entrepreneurs, nurturing local businesses, and strengthening communities through enterprise-led development.

John McGrillen brings a wealth of experience and leadership in economic development to the role. His distinguished career includes serving as Chief Executive of Down District Council, Director of Development at Belfast City Council, and most recently, a decade as Chief Executive of Tourism Northern Ireland, from which he retired in summer 2025. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to regional growth, place-making, and sustainable economic development.

Speaking on his appointment, John McGrillen said: “I am looking forward to working with the Board at Enterprise NI and with Michael McQuillan and the team as the organisation embarks on ambitious plans over the next few years. The way start-ups and local businesses need support and guidance is rapidly changing. Enterprise NI must work in partnership with others to ensure our local economy grows and our local communities thrive.”

Michael McQuillan, CEO of Enterprise NI, added: “John brings exceptional strategic insight and a deep understanding of economic development that will be invaluable as Enterprise NI enters its next phase. As we continue to evolve how we support entrepreneurs and local businesses, his leadership will help strengthen the LEA network and its collaboration across the ecosystem, enhancing our impact, and ensuring enterprise remains central to economic and community development across Northern Ireland.”
